(gras) any plant of the family Gramineae; many are commonly used as fodder for cattle and horses, and the family also includes food plants such as grains and sugar cane. Grasses whose pollen is important as a cause of hay fever include Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon); Kentucky bluegrass or June grass (Poa pratensis); Johnson grass (Sorghum halepense); orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata); redtop grass (Agrostis alba); sweet vernal grass (Anthoxanthum odoratum); and timothy or timothy grass (Phleum pratense). Johnson grass, Sudan grass, and arrow grass (Triglochin species) contain cyanogenetic compounds; timothy sometimes contains the mold Claviceps purpurea; and sweet vernal grass contains dicumarol. Any of these, when eaten in large quantities, can be fatal to livestock.Medical dictionary. 2011.
