the presence of abnormally large red cells (macrocytes) in the blood. Macrocytosis is a feature of certain anaemias (macrocytic anaemias), including those due to deficiency of vitamin B12 or folic acid, and also of anaemias in which there is an increase in the rate of red cell production.
