a synthetic female sex hormone (see progestogen) administered by mouth to treat menstrual disorders, including amenorrhoea. Its main use, however, is in oral contraceptives, often in combination with an oestrogen; it is also used in hormone replacement therapy. Trade names: Micronor, Primolut N.
