nu·cleo·cap·sid (noo″kle-o-kapґsid) a unit of viral structure, consisting of a capsid (protein coat) with the enclosed nucleic acid; some simple viruses are naked nucleocapsids, while in others the nucleocapsids form part of a more complex structure.
Nucleocapsid in a schematic diagram of HIV-1; molecules of protease, integrase, and reverse transcriptase, which also occur within the capsid, are omitted for simplicity.
