surgical removal of a testis, usually to treat germ-cell tumours of the testis, such as seminoma or teratoma, which are malignant tumours of the testis. Removal of both testes (castration) causes sterility and reduces levels of testosterone by 90%, which is an effective treatment for prostate cancer.
