A clinical syndrome, occurring mostly in older men, usually caused by enlargement of the prostate gland and manifested by irritative (nocturia, frequency, decreased voided volume, sensory urgency, and urgency incontinence) and obstructive (hesitancy, decreased stream, terminal dribbling, double voiding, and urinary retention) symptoms.

pros·ta·tism (prosґtə-tiz″əm) a symptom complex resulting from compression or obstruction of the urethra, usually due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (see under hyperplasia). There are both obstructive and neurological symptoms, including diminution in caliber and force of the urinary stream, hesitancy in initiating urination, inability to end it (with subsequent dribbling), a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying, and occasionally urinary retention.
