Raman Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata (1888-1970)
Indian physicist. Raman discovered in 1928 that when light of one frequency was transmitted through a medium, other frequencies were added and that they were characteristic of the material. The use of the Raman effect in determining fine molecular structure was instrumental in the making of laser spectrometers. In 1930 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics.
