Perichondrium
A dense membrane composed of fibrous connective tissue that closely wraps (invests) all cartilage, except the cartilage in joints which is covered by a synovial membrane. Peri- is a prefix borrowed from the Greek meaning "around or about" and "-chondrium" also comes from a Greek word "chondros" meaning "cartilage or gristle."
