pho·to·ther·a·py (fo″to-therґə-pe) [photo- + therapy] 1. the treatment of disease, e.g., herpes simplex, psoriasis, neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, or seasonal affective disorder, by exposure to light, especially by variously concentrated light rays or specific wavelengths. In complementary medicine, it is used as an adjunct to a wide variety of treatments, such as color therapy. Called also actinotherapy. 2. photodynamic therapy.
