cervical smear
(Papanicolaou test, Pap test)
test) a specimen of cellular material scraped from the neck (cervix) of the uterus that is stained and examined under a microscope in order to detect cell changes indicating the presence of cancer. The transformation zone of the cervix is most likely to produce evidence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia if present. Routine cervical smears are taken to detect precancerous and early cancerous changes.
