Term for a style of European architecture in the 12c to the 16c, most familiar in cathedrals with flying buttresses and pointed windows; broadly, the distinctive medieval style; the term is 17c and was then intended to be derogatory, as the Goths (3c to 5c German tribes) were considered to have been uncouth barbarians.
