Lit. 'grievances'. Latin word used by the Church when placing grievances before parliament. These frequently concerned taxes and tithes, such as the clerical tenth. Church liberties were also complained of, as was the freedom of Church courts. The basis of these grievances was lay and/or royal encroachment on Church prerogatives. -
