Lit. 'army geld'. Tax imposed by Aethelred the Unready and his successors to pay for the lithesmen who manned the ships in the king's service. It was discontinued in 1051 by Edward the Confessor but reimposed by William I. At the time it was the only national tax in all Europe. -
