Ne in dubium
Lit. 'lest in doubt'. Without admitting any direct involvement in Thomas Becket's death (29 December 1170), Henry II nevertheless acknowledged his responsibility. Ne in dubium was the document in which Henry's purgation and penances were set down. His reconciliation with the Church took place within and outside the *cathedral at Avranches on 21 May 1172. This was repeated at Caen nine days later, ensuring news of the event was widely disseminated.
