A medieval philosophic concept indicating the material body of an object, as distinct from its essence (referred to as 'substance'). Thus in eucharistic transubstantiation the accident of the bread, i.e. its material quality as bread, was believed to remain, while the words of consecration had changed its substance or essence into the body of Christ.
