The regarder was a knight responsible for checking local woods and forest areas every three years, reporting back to the forest court. There were 12 such knights. This inspection was known as the 'regard', which also referred to the area under his charge. He was required to check the metes and bounds of the forest and all things to do with the king's rights. These duties were set out in the Charter of the *Forest, 1217. The Latin was regardator. [< AnNor. regardour]
