One of the gentlemen of the privy chamber who served the king in the more private rooms of the palace. It was the groom's duty to empty the royal chamber-pot; this intimacy put him among the most senior of the gentlemen, ranking him below the vice-chamberlain. 'Stole' is found sometimes as a variant spelling. -
