Leaning staffs
In the 11c and 12c it was forbidden to sit down in a church or *cathedral. However, it was realised this posed problems for elderly or ailing monks. They were therefore permitted to use leaning staffs or reclinatoria, which were crutches fitting under the armpit. These staffs are mentioned in the *customary of Lincoln Cathedral. -
