(Pedro Vargas Mata)
(1906 or 1911?-1989)
one of the most famous pop singers of 20th-century Mexico, Pedro Vargas was born in San Miguel de Allende. A classically-trained tenor, Vargas originally sang opera but gained fame with his renditions of popular songs. He made many musical guest appearances in films from 1936 onward, but also had more substantial acting roles in a few pictures (he had over 70 screen credits,total). In 1942, Vargas performed at the White House for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, one of many honors he received during his long career. Vargas was known as "el Samuraí de la canción" (The Samurai of Song)!
