So, in keeping with another New York truism, some people actually complained, somehow finding fault with the pleasant turn in the weather. Cabbies expressed frustration that so many people chose to walk in the sun rather than ride, even as slush and rushing water replaced ice as a pedestrian hazard. And for some the day presented, in the vernacular of the moment, the challenge of wardrobe malfunction.

"It's definitely not a polar bear day," said Louis Scarcella, who, as president of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, would know. "I just took my jacket off. I'm sweating like a pig.
