ugliness
A topic less discussed in aesthetics than beauty, but deserving attention. First, it has ethical and political implications, since being surrounded by ugliness is evidently an injury or harm and one that might deserve ethical and political remedy. Secondly, it is important that there can exist aesthetic ‘disvalue’, or in other words that the kinds of contemplation characteristic of taking an aesthetic attitude to some object are not purely their own reward, but are sometimes preludes to disgust or disenchantment.
