1. to become unsociable, avoid people:

- X retreated into his shell.
♦ Иногда, отдаляясь и уходя в себя или в дружбу с кем-нибудь, он [Мандельштам] выпускал меня на свободу (Мандельштам 2). Occasionally, withdrawing into himself, or into his friendship with someone, he [Mandelstam] would let me be for a while (2a).
2. Also: УГЛУБЛЯТЬСЯ/УГЛУБИТЬСЯ В СЕБЯ to become temporarily self-absorbed, concentrating on one's own thoughts and/ or feelings:

- X became <was> engrossed (submerged) in his own thoughts.
♦ Зарипа... горько зарыдала, уйдя вся в себя, в свою боль и утрату (Айтматов 2). She [Zaripa] wept bitterly, completely retreating into herself, into her pain and her loss (2a).
♦ ...[Маяковский] надолго замолчал, ушёл глубоко в себя (Катаев 3). ...Не [Mayakovsky] plunged into a long silence, deeply submerged in his own thoughts (3a).
