These are variant spellings of a word derived from usquebaugh, a Gaelic name for a strong alcoholic liquor distilled from the fermented mash of such grains as barley, rye, corn, and wheat. The preferred spelling in the United States and Ireland is whiskey; in Great Britain and Canada, whisky. See also liqueur.
