Popular name for Bernardino di Betto di Biago (ca. 1454-1513), a painter from Perugia who worked in the Umbrian style. Until the influence of Raphael brought about a change in pop-ular taste, he was one of the most successful artists of his time. He was trained by Perugino and joined his master in Rome in 1481 to work on the frescoes of the new Sistine Chapel commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV. He also worked for other patrons at Rome, includ-ing two other popes, Innocent VIII and Alexander VI. For the lat-ter, he executed one of his most important commissions, the murals in the Borgia apartments in the Vatican Palace, including the Disputà di Santa Caterina (1492-1495).
