Vitry, Philippe de
(1291-1361)
   French composer and poet, also bishop of Meaux. His contemporary Petrarch knew and admired his French poetry, but he is best known as one of the leading figures of the new musical style known to contemporaries as ars nova. He wrote four treatises on the ars nova style. His surviving compositions include a number of motets.
