Dedovshchina
The name given to the informal system of subordination of junior conscripts, dedovshchina (regime of the grandfathers) is one of the most pernicious problems afflicting the Russian military. Going beyond simply hazing, the practice involves denial of food, rape, and intense physical and psychological abuse, often resulting in serious injuries and death. It also contributes to the extremely high rate of suicide among young soldiers. In recent years, the Committee of Soldiers’ Mothers of Russia has actively campaigned against the practice, bringing the worst abuses to light.
