Kono, Seizo
(1882-1963)
   A priest and scholar from a minor shrine in Saitama who graduated from Kokugakuin University to become first a middle school teacher then in 1929 Director of Shinto Studies at Kokugakuin and in 1935 its president. He was appointed by the Ministry of Education to its influential Kokumin seishin bunka kenkyusho in 1932 and to the editorial board of the notorious ethics textbook Kokutai no Hongi in 1935. In 1941 he was given responsibility for investigating school curricula and in 1944 became Minister of Education with central control of all religious education in Japan.
