Kuni no miyatsuko
The chief families of regional clans in ancient Japan, who retained local power under Yamato rule but gradually came to hold ritual rather than political significance. Some hereditary priestly families such as the Aso of Aso jinja and the Senge and Kitajima of Izumo taisha today claim descent from kuni no miyatsuko.
