Katori jingu
A major shrine in Chiba. One of the oldest shrines in Japan, it is traditionally paired with Kashima jingu at the other end of lake Kasumi-ga-ura. The shrine is dedicated to Futsu-nushi (or Iwai-nushi no kami), a warrior-kami who with Take-mika-zuchi-no-kami pacified Japan to make way for the descent and rule of the heavenly kami. An o-ta-ue-sai (rice-planting festival) is held at the shrine on 5-6th May.
