City in north-eastern Massachusetts, a country seat (with Cambridge) of Middlesex County, at the falls of the Marrimac River at its junction with the Concord River, ab. 24 mi. NW of Boston: manufactures of cotton and woolen goods. It was long the chief seat of cotton manufacture in America (hence its nickname the "Spindle City"). It is the seat of the Lowell Textile Institute and a state teachers college.
