English writer and illustrator; grandfather of Daphne du Maurier (1834-1896)

George du Maurier [George du Maurier]

(1834–96) a ↑cartoonist and writer of novels, the son of English and French parents. He is best known for his ↑cartoons (= humorous drawings) in ↑Punch about the social life of rich people. His novels were also very successful, and the name of one of his characters, ↑Svengali in the novel Trilby, has become part of the English language. He was the grandfather of Daphne du Maurier.
