Ralph Vaughan Williams [Ralph Vaughan Williams]
(1872–1958) a popular English ↑composer. He was influenced mainly by traditional English music, especially of the ↑Tudor period, and his work often suggests English life and traditions and the English countryside. His best-known short pieces include Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (1910) and The Lark Ascending (1914). He also wrote several works for orchestra, as well as songs, operas and film music. He was made a member of the ↑Order of Merit in 1935.
