a city in western ↑California, in the Santa Clara Valley. Because of the many computer and electronics companies there, the area is often called ↑Silicon Valley. San Jose also produces fruit and wine. It was the capital of California from 1849 to 1851. An ↑earthquake in 1989 caused some damage.
