Stephen [Stephen]

(c. 1097–1154) the king of England from 1135 to 1154. He was the ↑grandson of ↑William the Conqueror and became king even though he had agreed that his cousin ↑Matilda had the right to the ↑throne. He spent much of his period as king resisting her attempts to become queen, and finally agreed that her son ↑Henry II would become king when he died.
