(1771–1832) a Scottish author and poet. Most of his poetry and his historical novels are based on the traditions and history of Scotland, especially the border region. His most famous poems include The Lay of the Last Minstrel and ↑Lady of the Lake, and his best-known novels include ↑Waverley, ↑Rob Roy and ↑Ivanhoe. All were extremely popular during his life and influenced writers in Britain and Europe. Scott was made a ↑baronet in 1820.
