In the 18th century it became a fashionable place for people to swim, and it is still a popular place for people to spend their holidays. Its well-known buildings include the ↑Royal Pavilion and the Palace Pier, and it is also famous for its ↑Regency architecture. The Grand Hotel was the scene of the Brighton bombing in 1984, when five people died after the ↑IRA tried to kill members of the Conservative government who were in Brighton for the party conference.
