Buffalo Bill [Buffalo Bill]
the popular name of William Cody (1846–1917), an American ↑frontiersman and (later) entertainer. He killed many ↑buffalo to provide meat for workers on the Kansas Pacific Railroad. He was also a rider for the ↑Pony Express in 1860. Ned Buntline made him famous by writing stories about his life in his ↑dime novels. In the 1870s Buffalo Bill organized his own Wild West Show to entertain audiences in the US and Europe.
