Edmund Burke [Edmund Burke]
(1729–97) a British ↑Whig politician and writer, born in Ireland. He was a ↑Member of Parliament (1765–94) but is best remembered for speaking and writing in favour of American ↑independence and the rights of Irish Catholics. In his best-known book, Reflections of the Revolution in France (1790), he argued against the more extreme acts of the French Revolution.
