(1570–1606) one of the people involved in the ↑Gunpowder Plot to blow up the British ↑Houses of Parliament. He is the most famous of the ↑conspirators (= people involved in the plan) because he was caught with the ↑gunpowder (= explosive powder), ↑tortured until he gave the names of the others, and later killed. There is a tradition in Britain of burning ‘guys’ representing him every year on Guy Fawkes Night.
