a north-eastern US state which was one of the 13 original states. It is also known as the Empire State. It has the third largest population of any state, after ↑California and ↑Texas. The largest city is ↑New York, and the capital city is Albany. Henry Hudson visited the area in 1609, and the first people to settle there permanently were the Dutch in 1624.
