BACALL, Lauren
(1924– )
Although Lauren Bacall played on Broadway at a very early age, it was not until she appeared on the March 1943 cover of Harper’s Bazaar that she got her break. Howard Hawks’s wife, Nancy, pointed Bacall out to her husband and the director assigned her to play opposite her future husband, Humphrey Bogart, in To Have and Have Not(1944).While she made her reputation early in non-Western films, Bacall has one memorable Western to her credit. She played opposite John Wayne in his last picture, The Shootist (1976). As Bond Rogers, the strong-willed rooming house proprietor, Bacall is a match for rough-but-aging John Bernard Books (Wayne), the notorious gunfighter.
