Modern Kom Aushim. Atown during the Graeco-Roman Period in the Arsinoite nome of the Fayum. It flourished from the Ptolemaic Period until the 5th century AD. It was excavated by an expedition from the University of Michigan from 1924–1935 and found in an excellent state of preservation. Approximately 5,000 inscribed documents were recovered that illustrate life in Karanis, mainly in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
