Marina f
Italian, Spanish, English, Scottish, and German: from a Late Latin name, a feminine form of the family name Marīnus. This was in fact a derivative of MARIUS (SEE Marius), but even during the early centuries AD it was widely assumed to be identical with the Latin adjective marīnus ‘of the sea’. The early saints of this name are all of extremely shaky historical identification. In Scotland the name has been used as an Anglicized form of MÀIRI (SEE Màiri), in place of plain MARY (SEE Mary), following the pattern of feminine derivatives in -ina (cf. e.g. Angusina and Calumina).
