Marius
Marius m
Latin name, used in English, German, French, and other European languages: from a Roman family name of uncertain derivation. It is probably from Mars, the name of the Roman god of war, or from the adjective mas (genitive maris) male, virile. A derivation from mare sea has been proposed by some writers, but seems unlikely (cf. MARINA (SEE Marina)). This name and in particular its southern European form Mario owe their popularity to having been pressed into service as masculine equivalents of MARY (SEE Mary) in countries where the cult of the Virgin Mary is strong.
Cognate: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese: Mario. See also MARIAN (2) (SEE Marian).
