George VI [George VI]
(1895–1952) king of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (1936–52). He was the second son of ↑George V and became king after the ↑abdication of his brother ↑Edward VIII. He was greatly admired by the British people during ↑World War II for staying in London when it was being ↑bombed. He was the last British king to be called ‘emperor’ and the first head of the Commonwealth of Nations.
