Gian Carlo, italienischer Komponist, * Cadegliano (bei Varese) 7. 7. 1911; studierte in Mailand und Philadelphia (Pa.) und lehrte 1941-55 am Curtis-Institute of Music ebenda; gründete 1958 das »Festival dei Due Mondi« (Festival zweier Welten) in Spoleto (Italien). Menotti wurde v. a. als Komponist (auch Librettist) von Opern mit aktuellen Stoffen bekannt; er verbindet Stileinflüsse des Verismo mit Elementen der Tonsprache G. Puccinis und I. Strawinskys.
